Project Location: Central Business District along Haihe River, Hedong District, Tianjin, China
Project Type: Super high-rise office and commercial complex (twin office towers + commercial podium)
GETO Products: Aluminium formwork system, supported by dynamic matching system, aluminium-wood composite system, and 3D lightweight engineering management system
Project Overview
Tianjin Zhonghai City Plaza is located in the central business district along Tianjin’s “most beautiful kilometre” of the Haihe River waterfront. With a total gross floor area of approximately 370,000 m², the main tower reaches 340 metres in height, with 71 floors above ground and 4 floors underground. It is a mixed-use super high-rise complex comprising twin office towers and a commercial podium. Upon completion, it will become a landmark gateway building in Tianjin and a benchmark project in the Hedong District CBD core area.
GETO’s aluminium formwork products were used for this project. As the tallest, largest, and most structurally complex super high-rise project under construction in the city, the project features “tight construction site, complex steel structure nodes, numerous component types, and high fabrication precision requirements”.
Project Characteristics
- Continuous variable cross-sections of the core wall and perimeter columns – The core wall and perimeter columns undergo multiple cross-sectional changes and structural form transformations, placing extremely high demands on the adaptability and transition accuracy of the formwork system.
- Significant floor height differences in refuge floors – Refuge floors in super high-rise buildings have different floor heights from standard floors, requiring special treatment to balance structural safety and construction efficiency.
- Constrained site and numerous component types – The site in the city core is limited. Steel structure nodes are complex, component types are diverse, and fabrication precision requirements are high.
GETO Solution
- Dynamic matching system – In response to the continuous variable cross-sections, GETO’s technical team innovatively adopted a “dynamic matching system” to achieve precise transitions between different cross-sectional dimensions, avoiding the cost and schedule loss of frequent formwork changes.
- Aluminium-wood composite system – For areas with significant floor height differences, such as refuge floors, GETO applied an aluminium-wood composite system: aluminium formwork as the main body, supplemented by timber formwork in local non-standard height areas, flexibly addressing height variations while ensuring safety and efficiency.
- 3D lightweight management system – GETO’s proprietary 3D lightweight management system enables factory pre-assembly (eliminating on-site trial assembly) and visual acceptance. Managers can view the main structural model and all aluminium formwork positions in real time on mobile devices, greatly improving formwork assembly efficiency.
- Full-process service support – GETO’s technical team was deeply involved from the detailing stage, optimising solutions in advance for site constraints and complex components; strictly controlling fabrication precision during production; and providing on-site technical guidance throughout to ensure efficient installation and turnover of the aluminium formwork system.
Project Progress
As of April 2025:
- Plot A has been completed.
- The main structure of the super high-rise office building in Plot B has reached the 56th floor.
- The project is expected to be fully completed by January 2028.
Project Value
- Technical breakthrough – The dynamic matching system, aluminium-wood composite system, and 3D lightweight management system provide a replicable technical path for similar complex super high-rise projects.
- Green and smart construction – The high turnover rate of aluminium formwork reduces timber consumption, while digital management lowers on-site trial assembly and material waste, practising the concept of smart construction.
- Brand significance – Supporting the construction of a landmark gateway building in Tianjin further consolidates GETO’s leading position in the super high-rise formwork sector.
